Picture shows the start of one of the Club's famous races at Bramall Lane, which brought in huge crowds of spectators.The track had square corners, and as the Cricket Club complained bitterly of damage to their pitchif the cyclists used to many cinders for banking them up, cycle racing at 'The Lane' could be dangerous. Sharrow Cycling Club; Cycling in Sheffield really began in 1872, when the Sheffield Bicycling Club opened its training ground in Sharrow Vale.Here for the price of 6d. novices could have their first taste of the joys of mounting a 52 wheel ordinary , or a penny farthing.In 1887 four keen cyclists from Sharrow, met at the bottom of Rundle Road and decided to form Sharrow Cycling Club.
